Hooray Hooray!! The twists are out!!! I began the dreaded take down process late Tuesday night and finally finished up around 10pm. last night. That may seem like a long time to you, but it certainly didn't feel that way to me. Based on appearance I could have kept them in longer, but even a "protective" can be damaging when worn for too long. As you know, I don't wash my twists...at all. Spritzing it here and there with water, but that can't replace a good thorough wash. My scalp was desperate to be cleaned after almost 6 weeks of wearing twists.
Last night after snapping the pics below I washed my hair in 4 sections with Elucence MB Shampoo and saturated it with Bee Mine Deep Conditioner. I actually still have the deep conditioner in under a plastic cap as I type lol! Once I rinse it out I'll probably set it in braids for a braidout...I don't think I really have the patience to do any other style.
Also I know I kinda hinted that I'd do a take down video, but I didn't...sorry :( I was on a roll getting those twists out and recording a video would have only slowed me down. However, I recorded a tutorial back in January 2010 and I haven't changed my method at all. You can view that video >HERE<.
...feels so good to have my hair loose again!!

Nothing special... My twists have finally reached the 5 week mark and are holding up really well, but I'm so ready to snatch them out and wash my hair! I planned to do the take down over the weekend, but plans were made and I have no time. Then I decided I'll take them out next week, but I have a few interviews lined up and I can't be showing up all hair half done and such lol! So it looks I'll be hanging on to these bad boys for another week :(
My scalp doesn't look too bad, but there is a persistent halo of frizz on the top of my head and around my edges. I've been trying to lay it down with a little water and Nourish & Shine, then covering with a scarf, but that only works for a few hours. So I'll definitely have to re-twist those areas. Another issue I face when wearing my twists for too long, is that I find a lot of random loose single strands. Loose strands among twists can cause a lot of unnecessary breakage....they must get re-twisted asap. Other than those issues they're doing fine.
I'll keep you guys posted on exactly when I take them down with lots of pics of course and maybe even a video....maybe lol! Check the pics I took this morning after the jump.
Happy Friday Everyone :)

I finally got around to snipping those pesky dry ends that I mentioned in my "Tension Blow Drying" video. This trim was wayyyy over due, but better late than never, right? So...early last Saturday (10/22) I gave a myself a trim by snipping off an 1/2 an inch all over. How did I do it you ask? Well, continue reading for a short video of me explaining the steps I took. I must warn you though, I was tired and not looking to cute AT ALL, so like a good neighbor please look past the bags under my eyes :) Enjoy!

Hey guys...long time no postings eh?? I've been a little busy, but I did finally find some time to record this tutorial for all you twist lovers out there. I'm already 2 weeks into this set and they're holding up quite nicely. After the jump you'll find some pics of them freshly done and a few I took yesterday. Enjoy the tutorial and keep an eye out for the bonus clips :)

Ok Ok...it's not REALLY how my hair is today, but it led to how my hair is today :) I blew my hair out on Tuesday to do my mini twists and I even recorded the whole process. Its going to take a few days until that video gets uploaded, because there is a ton of editing that needs to be done. I'm not looking forward to that task at all lol! In the meantime check out a sneak of my twists below :)
Happy Friday Ladies!!

The title says it all...I wore my twists for 3 weeks and the twist out cam out fabulous!! But before I get into that I want to go over my last few days wearing the twists...
First of it was hot...no more like HOT everyday last week and the HUMIDITY was ridiculous! Although the weather cause me a lot of frizz, the humidity actually helped to keep my twists plumped and soft. For the last week or so my regime has been super simple...almost nonexistent lol! I massaged my scalp using Bee Mine Scalp Serum, spray my ends with water and that's it. I did that process every other day, except for the day I took these photos. I applied a little Avocado Shea Butter to seal the moisture in after spritzing with water.
The next day I decided go ahead and take down. I had initially planned to wash my hair immediately after the take down, but after seeing the first couple twists unraveled decided to rock a twist out instead. The definition was CRAZY and felt so soft. And you would think that because the SMCES (Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie) is such a thick product that my hair would feel weighed down and greasy, but it didn't feel that way at all. Here's a couple of the take down and twistout...

My twists hit the 4 week mark on Saturday, but I've been dragging my feet to take them down. I really want to keep them in for one more week, but I noticed some tangles due to stray hairs and a little dandruff (yuck), so these twists have got to go! I'll start the take down tonight, after me, hubby and the kids take in a fireworks show, and hopefully I finish by tomorrow afternoon. Once all the twists are out I plan to dust off my Huetiful Steamer ( I haven't used it in months lol!) for a quick pre poo, shampoo and then apply Rhassoul Clay for an overnight treatment. I'll probably do braid outs for the next 2 weeks to give my hair a rest and then right back to twists.

So I've made it to the 2 week mark and the twists are holding up nicely...as usual. Not much has changed in my routine, but because of all the humidity in the air my edges and crown have been getting a bit fuzzy. To remedy this I've just been re-twisting random pieces that are a little unruly with a little Shea Moisture Masque. Also I'm still keeping with the same routine of spritzing my ends with water and baggying....I've been slacking a little bit though lol! As far as styling goes, it's been very minimal. Mostly worn down with an occasional updo. And that's pretty much it....

I've mentioned my twists maintenance a couple times before but I still get lots of comments and messages asking how I do it. So I figured I'd explain with pictures this time lol! Note...These steps are usually done at night, so the pics are of my hair the next morning after all these steps were taken the night before.
Step #1: I begin my night prep by oiling my scalp using Bee Mine's Hair Growth Serum. I've never seen a significant amount of growth when using this product, but my scalp loves the ingredients and it really soaks in, making my roots soft and shiny...not oily. I do this step every other day and when I'm not being too lazy, I give it a little massage.
Step #2: Next I divide my hair in two sections and spray the ends, until damp, with water or Bee Mine Moisturizing Spritz. I then gather the twists in to a low ponytail and cover the loose wet ends with a plastic sandwich bag and secure it with another ponytail holder. Doing this will keep your ends moist throughout the night....like a mini deep conditioning for your ends. You can even do this step in the day time when your at school or work, just cover your hair with a pretty and no one will ever know lol! Then I smooth a little Avocado Shea Butter to the edges and crown to smooth down fuzzies and cover with a satin scarf.
Step #3: Well there really isn't a "step 3", just remove the scarf, ponytail holders plastic bag and go! In the morning I hardly ever need to add anything else, the twists are soft, moisturized and have a great sheen. The low pony does leave behind a slight bump, but it doesn't bother me too much because I usually where them up and off the shoulders.
In the end, your ends should feel smooth and well moisturized. And the length of your hair should be soft with a nice sheen, without build up on your scalp. Simple and easy! If I ever need to retwist, I use SM's Shea Butter Masque, the same thing I use to twist with. If there's anything that your still unsure about regarding these twists please let me know in the comments below!

Hey ladies! I know it's been a whollle week since my last posting, but I promise you I haven't forgotten about you guys. Computer issues and just not having enough time is to blame. Today I just wanted to give you guys a little hair update....My twists are going on 2 weeks old and are holding up pretty well. I've been spritzing (with water) and baggying my ends almost every other night and oil massaging my scalp whenever I can remember to lol! I retwisted a few in the front earlier this week to keep it looking fresh...and that's it!

Last Saturday night..crampy and bored, I decided to throw in some twists as a protective style. I began by washing, conditioning and detangling my hair. I then applied grape seed oil and a small dab of Jane Carter's Hair Nourishing Cream (I had a small sample...I do a full review of that brand soon) to 4 sections and set them in braids to air dry. Once 85-90% dry I blow dried using the "Tension Method", this method is much easier/faster for me compared to using a comb attachment. I planned on doing med sized twists like these >>here, but I got so caught in watching "The Kids Are All Right" I didn't realize I was twisting them small and medium lol! I doubt if guys can really tell the difference, but it turned a 4 hour job in to a 5-6 hour job. In the end I was tired, but I loved the results! The only product I used to twist was SM Deep Treatment Mask and I plan on keeping this in for 3 weeks. This maybe even a staple summer style and routine for me this year...wear the twist for 3 weeks, unravel for a banging twist, rock that look for a few days, then wash and twist all over again. Super simple, cute and protective :)

Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress
Product Description: This product was created out of desire for the total package. Nothing too thick, too oily or too heavy but I wanted something that would coat and protect my hair (specifically thick natural, highly textured coils) when wearing a plaited style longer than a few weeks - all while nourishing and strengthening my hair. After 2 years of formulating Ginger Juice & Berries, I finally came up with the perfect recipe that meets all of those hair demands. Another bonus that was discovered is the lack of heavy product build after wearing a style for an extended period of time.
Ingredients: Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Arnica montana (Flower) Extract, Sesamum indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Emblica Officinalis (Amla) Extract, Bacopa monniera (Brahmi) Extract, Jatamansi Nardostachys (Spikenard) Extract, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Oryza sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Elaeis guineensis (Palm) Kernel Oil, Daucus carota sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Lecithin, Candelilla (Euphorbia cerifera) Wax, Glycine Soja (Soybean)Wax, Green Tea Extract, Zingiber officinale (Ginger) Root Powder, Eleuthrococcus senticocus (Ginseng) Powder, Olea europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Alkanna tinctoria (Alkanet) Root Powder, Artemisia pallens (Davana) Oil, Zingiber officinale (Ginger) Oil, Citrus sinensis (Sweet Orange) Oil, Tocopherol
Cost: 4 oz jar / $16.99 @ www.LGBN.com
My Thoughts: Lavida reached out to me weeks ago to try some of her hair goodies, but once they arrived I couldn't figure out to use them lol! There was no directions on the label. So after contacting Lavida I was ready to give them a try with her usage recommendations. I start off by shampooing my hair and once cleaned I applied the Carrot & Castor Conditioning Oil in 4 sections. I could definitely feel the softness immediately. The color, just like the GJB Hairdress, is very...orange, but I didn't think too much of it. The 4 sections were then braided and air dried until 80-90% dry. I then divided my hair into smaller sections and applied the Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress to create medium sized, stretched 2 strand twists. The look of this product reminds me of carrot baby food lol! I was like ehhhh...but I went with anyway. I used just a little for each twists, because I didn't want my hair to be too greasy. Once finished my hair looked and felt great! It was soft, the twists were smooth and the shine was incredible.
I was soooo close to loving these products, but then I noticed the collar of my tee that I wore while doing my hair was was stained yellow :( I was like WTH! I didn't even use that much product and I followed the owner's direction. I love me some white tees, in fact I just brought a natural hair tee that I can't wear until I wash my hair...BUMMER! I don't think I'll use the GJB Hairdress again, unless I find away to avoid not staining my clothes. However, it's a great product for twists, braids and I'm sure it could be use for locs as well. I loved how my hair felt after using the C & C Conditioning, but I'll be using it for pre-poo purposes only. Both products are PACKED full of goodness for your hair...I just wish the color didn't stain :(

I've heard a lot great things about Shea Moisture products, but I had no intention of actually trying them out. that is until I found that not only are SM products being sold at Walgreens now, but that they were buy one get one free!! That deal changed my mind real quick lol! Before heading to Walgreens, which is actually Happy Harry's in my area, I got some suggestions for my Twitter tweeps. Almost everyone suggested I pick of the Coconut & Hibiscus collection and a few mentioned the Yucca & Baobab collection. After looking up the benefits of those, as well as the other collections SM offers, I made up my mind on what I was going to get. I wanted pick up a few of the Coconut & Hibiscus and African Black Soap items, but when I got to the store all they had was the C&H and the Organic Shea Butter :( I wasn't to excited about the Shea Butter so I only picked up the masque, but I grabbed it anyway since it was bogo.
The Shea Butter masque has a nutty, yet light and fresh scent. It's ingredients include Shea Butter (of course), Sea Kelp and Argan Oil. It can also double as a leave in. The Coconut & Hibiscus is smells sweet and coconutty...yummm! All 3 from that collection contain Coconut Oil, Neem Oil and Silk Protein. Both collections are packed with great ingredients, I'll keep you posted on how my hair responds to them. The BOGO promotion ends tomorrow April 2nd so if your thinking of trying this brand or your already a fan visit your local Walgreens/Happy Harry's or Walgreens.com to get some goodies!!

....just slightly bigger!
Last week after washing my kinks back to life, I decided to twist my hair back up. It wasn't my first choice though. I had planned to do small braids, but once I started braiding I got tired immediately. Then I tried to do some small twists, but after a few rows I ended up taking those down as well. Frustrated and after many hours wasted I decided to do medium sized twists instead.
Now whenever I do small braids or twists, I always do so on blow dried hair. This time I let my hair air dry in about 5 big braids that had been generously slathered with Grape Seed Oil the night before. Then once fully dried the next morning I unraveled each one and stretched the roots with my blow dryer on low heat. This my hair before and after stretching the roots...
Unstretched - Stretched
Once I decided to do medium sized twists I grabbed some Curl Clouds (by SafiHairCare) and began twisting. It took me from 4pm to maybe 12-1 o'clock in the morning to finish. That may seem like a long time to ya'll, but I'm a slow twister/braider lol! It usually takes me between 3 to 5 days to do my micro twists! This is what they looked like halfway finished...
Here's the completed look...

These pics were snapped last Friday, a few hours before I actually took them down. My hair was a hot dirty mess, especially at the roots so a simple bun was my only way to disguise the mess lol!
Note: This is the last time I'll be wearing my twists for longer than 4 weeks. My hair was sooo dry at the 6th week compared to previous sets of twists. Going forward I'll keep my twists in for 4 or 4.5 weeks and I'll try my best to not slack on keep them moisturized....lesson learned for me!

My twists officially became 4 weeks old on Saturday (12/04) and they are still looking good. This is usually around the time that I begin to miss my loose hair and can't wait to get the twists out, but suprisingly I still enjoying them. My regime has been simple...Spritz my ends with water and seal the ends with Shea Butter or Bee Mine's Curly Butter every few days. Sometimes, not often, I oil and massage my scalp with a little Vatika Oil. This past weekend I went in on some pesky single strand knots that were bugging me and to keep it fresh looking I re-twisted some at the top and along the sides. Tonight I plan on setting my twists on perm rods, for a cute curly look...I'll be sure to take pics :)
