Most of us naturals are familiar with Esperanza and have enjoyed her music and her gorgeous fro for some time now. However, it seems her name is a bit unknown amongst the younger Bieber type crowds lol! Viewers were stunned when her name was called as the winner, beating out big names like Justin Bieber and Drake in the Best New Artist category. Heck, I didn't even know she was nominated for anything lol!! Since her win, the fans of the other nominees (mainly the Bieber fans) have been voicing their anger via twitter and other outlets, basically saying she doesn't deserve the win. Well kids, sometimes it's more about the music and talent than sales...sorry :)

Absolutely Gorgeous!!!

Back when 106th & Park was about something, hosts Free and AJ graced my television everyday after school. Never paid too much attention to AJ, it was Free who grab attention of young teens, male and female. Her outfits were on point, the shoes always fierce and the hair ever changing and bold. Back then natural was not a big deal to me...not much of a thought either. However, I admired her look and the confidence she had to be on tv everyday completely owning a look that most women in the industry hid. When I think about it now, back then that was something rare to see. The bloggers over at Naturally Me recently wrote a post about Free and her natural hair, and Free responded with a bog of her own!

Here's a few excerpts for Free's blog that I found interesting....

So here's the background on my hair: I was born with a head full of it (in more ways than one)! My hair is a mixture of my DNA, strong and stubborn in parts (especially on top of my head), soft and curly in other spots, which makes me what hairdressers call an "interesting head". Here's the real on my background: African American, Indian and West Indian.

What does that have to do with my hair? Everything. Because I can wet and it'll get curly, but as it dries up it just rises up to that afro (even when I don't want it to). If I want a straight look for a night (and I mean one night, because the humidity will curl it right back up)I use a blow dryer, flat iron and hairspray to keep it down as long as I can, but I promise you in the AM my hair will be on it's way back to afro.

Now I am a fan of weaves and wigs, especially in this entertainment business. If you don't take care of what GOD gives you will have nothing left. So helllll yeah I weave sometimes and wig sometimes, all depending on my mood. You'll know how I'm feeling any day if you look at my hair. Daring, conservative, funky, crazy, soft, sexy, rebel, even the "Pepe Le Pew" looks work for me. You know why? Because it''s just hair, it's mine, whether it's all mine or not and I shall do whatever I feel like with it....Hmmph!

Free goes on to address mother's with multicultural or highly textured children, as well as an unnamed female entertainer who told her once that she(Free) looked so much more feminine with straight hair....Oh No She DIDN'T lol! MRA: What advice could you give women on hair care tips? Because a lot of people say "Oh, Melanie's hair is nice", but your traveling all the time. So what products do you use and how do you keep your hair....
MF: Yeah hair care is very, very important! I actually had to cut off like 2 1/2 inches from my hair just because the wear and tear of it, traveling, people doing your hair, heat going on it. More so now then ever, the big thing that I have to do is I really try to deep condition ever time I wash my hair now. There's a really great one that I started using by Sebastian (I believe it's called Sebastian) called Penetraitt, just 2 or 3 minutes in the shower, you leave it in and rinse it out. And then I started using Kerastase, there's a thermal nectar treatment that you can put in like a leave in treatment, I swear by it! I use Moroccan and anything that's really going to keep the hair nourished, is really important. And when you put heat on your hair, as much as I do...unlike today. Today I didn't do anything, just washed it and left it. I try to avoid heat whenever I can, but anything that's nourishing. Kerastase products are amazing! They make a really great deep conditioning masque. Another one that's really good is L'Oreal Absolut Repair, it's a really really good deep conditioner treatment.

Singer Goapele showed off her creative new do while rocking the stage in Atlanta, for the 1st ONE MusicFest outdoor concert.  I think I've mentioned this before I'm so not into her music, not that I've really tried to get into it. But when it comes to styling her natural hair she brings it! Now this whole gold unicorn look is not for me at all lol! However, she pulls it off and it looks gorgeous on her. The profile is just stunning to me!
